The history of newspapers goes back to ancient Rome, where handwritten news sheets called Acta Diurna were displayed in public places. They shared important events, government activities and public announcements. In the 15th century, Johannes Gutenberg developed the printing press in Europe. This made written information faster and easier to produce. During the 17th century, printed newspapers began appearing regularly in Europe, bringing fresh news to more and more readers. Newspapers helped people learn about politics, society, business, sports and important events happening around them. In India, the first newspaper was the Bengal Gazette, started by James Augustus Hicky in 1780. Later, newspapers were published in many Indian languages, reaching people across the country. Today, newspapers are available in both printed and digital forms, and continue to provide news and information around the world.
